I’m bored of white DIY punks
I’m bored of your art and your long-winded Crimethinc musings about stars and shit
I’m bored of the photos you take of yourselves with your cats and plants
I’m bored of the green hair you can pull off because it doesn’t clash with your skin
I’m angry that I bleached my hair and skin as a teen to look like you
I bleached my fucking skin as penance
For being told I looked “too ghetto” by white punks as a kid and now I understand
I’m not impressed by you anymore
You just bore me
I went to a punk show for the first time in a while this past weekend (I mostly went cause mytongueisforked was going, so I knew I wouldn’t be the only person of color there). People were surprised to see me there because I’d been complaining about how bored I am with white punk. And once again, I was pretty bored. Other than my friends’ band playing, I was just kinda wondering why I ditched my James Baldwin book for it.
The thing that really cracks me up is when white punks assume what they’re doing is inherently radical. Like if I say “DIY” enough times, capitalism crumbles.
But then I get there and I’m like, cool, a bunch of skinny white people have made a social bubble around themselves in which they get together wearing identical outfits and constructing an identity of being social misfits and hating the same things in a neighborhood they have no connection to. Oh yeah, absolutely radical and groundbreaking.
I mean, yeah, being an able-bodied cis middle-class white skinny person with a funny haircut or who rides a bike or who is vegan is definitely what dooms you to being a social misfit in a society built on ableism, transphobia, classism, racism, and body shaming? Analysis, y’all.
And oh shit, that whole thing of labeling non-punks “normies” while not getting that your whole scene is unwelcoming and uninteresting and unengaging for, say, people of color or single working moms or disabled people.
The only emotion punk shows really bring up in me anymore is missing the hip-hop community I grew up in.
White punks are boring…
Yes, the anarchists especially.
Anarchism is basically a punk clique but wordier.
